What Are Voice of the Child Reports?
At CW Therapy we understand the importance of ensuring that children's voices are heard when parents are making decisions about parenting time and responsibilities after separation or divorce. A Voice of the Child Report (VCR) provides a structured way for children to share their thoughts, concerns, and preferences in a safe, neutral and confidential space.

A VCR may be requested by one or both parents or ordered by a judge in cases where there is a contentious parenting matter. The report helps provide insight into a child’s perspective on their life and the issues in dispute between their parents, assisting the court in its decision-making process. The practitioner's role is to gather the child’s independent(and subjective?) views and preferences and present them in a formal report for the court’s consideration.
Our VCR practitioners have been formally trained and certified, and follow a carefully designed process that prioritizes the child’s well-being. Children work with a neutral professional in a safe and supportive environment where they can express themselves freely, knowing they have control over the information shared with their parents. While a child’s voice is respected, they are reassured that ultimate decisions remain with the parents or the court.

Important Note: A Voice of the Child Report can be prepared by a lawyer, social worker, psychologist, or counselor. Unlike reports from the Office of the Children’s Lawyer or a Section 30 Parenting Plan Assessment, this report is non-therapeutic and typically does not include the professional’s opinion. Its sole purpose is to provide the judge with the child’s views, which are then taken into consideration in the decision-making process.

Considering a Child’s Voice in Court Decisions
When parents take the time to listen to their child's views and preferences, they often gain a more child-centered perspective. This understanding can help reduce conflict and foster greater agreement in decision-making, often leading to improved co-parenting and better outcomes for the child.
Benefits of a Voice of the Child Report
Cost Effective
A traditional parenting plan involving custody and access agreements can be time consuming and costly. VOC reports are often much more cost effective and completed in a shorter timeframe.
Non-Intrusive
Unlike other assessments, these reports focus solely on the child’s subjective perspective in a neutral and supportive space. The report captures the child's views, wishes and experiences in their own words, focusing on their feelings about family dynamics, living arrangements or other important decisions.
Judicial Efficiency
Judges find VOC Reports valuable because they provide a clear, unbiased account of the child's views. This can help simplify decisions, reduce the need for lengthy testimony, shorten trials, and even encourage early settlements.
Empowers the Child
Most importantly, VCR Reports give children the opportunity to express what matters most to them in a safe and supportive way, without pressure or fear of judgement.
Neutral and Unbiased
VOC Reports are focused on gathering and conveying the child's voice without making recommendations or judgments about parenting capacity.
How Much Does a Voice of the Child Report Cost?
CW Therapy uses a retainer model for separation and divorce services. This means that a payment is made in advance and as the work is done, the money in the retainer is used. If there is money left in the retainer at the end of service, this is returned.

For VCRs, we require a retainer of $2,300 for each child. Payment can be made by e-transfer, cheque, or credit card.
